Lisa Mezzacappa: Glorious Ravage

BRAVA! Theater Center

Composer and bassist Lisa Mezzacappa presents Glorious Ravage, a panoramic song cycle featuring a large ensemble of California improvisers with new films by Janis Crystal Lipzin, Alfonso Alvarez, Kathleen Quillian and Konrad Steiner. Glorious Ravage is inspired by the adventures and writings of Victorian lady explorers, who trekked to the wildest parts of the earth, to escape, to discover, and to lose themselves.

This is what SF/Arts curator Jesse Hamlin has to say about Lisa Mezzacappa: Glorious Ravage :

The bass-playing composer unveils her new “panoramic free jazz song cycle,” inspired by the writings of adventurous Victorian ladies like explorer Mary Kingsley and mountaineer Annie Peck. A dozen fine improvisers like trumpeter Darren Johnston and pianist Myra Melford play to the accompaniment of film and animation created for the occasion.
