Sadie Barnette: The New Eagle Creek Salon

The Lab

Sadie Barnette's newest installation reimagines her father's bar--the first black-owned gay bar in San Francisco. From 1990-93 Rodney Barnette operated the New Eagle Creek Saloon, a family-run business which served a multiracial gay community marginalized by the racist profiling practices of San Francisco's bar scene at that time.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock has to say about Sadie Barnette: The New Eagle Creek Salon :

Sadie Barnette has transformed The Lab into The New Eagle Creek Salon, the first Black-owned gay bar in San Francisco, run by her father 1990–1993. A series of public programs animates Barnette’s bar installation, which is the center of queer community gathering “bar nights.” At the end of the exhibition, the show will be transformed into a float for the SF Pride Parade, June 30.
