Lee Friedlander: Signs

Fraenkel Gallery

This exhibition examines the five-decade long obsession of this highly influential photographer. Since the early 1960s, Friedlander has focused on the signs that inscribe the American landscape, from hand-lettered ads to storefront windows to massive billboards. The exhibition is accompanied by a 144-page hardcover book published by Fraenkel Gallery..

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock has to say about Lee Friedlander: Signs :

Lee Friedlander has taken photographs of signage in the American landscape since the 1960s, capturing the “found poetry of commerce and desire” over a five-decade career. This juicy survey presents selections from this expansive endeavor, along with a new hardcover book published by the gallery. It’s always hard to say whether Fraenkel produces better shows or books – go see both.
