Woody De Othello

San Jose Museum of Art

Oakland-based ceramicist Woody De Othello's anthropomorphized domestic objects reflect the artist's interest in African objects designed for both ritual and utilitarian functions. The work is simultaneously humorous and imposing, lumpen and glossy, evoking a kind of tactility that's exclusive to ceramics. A new body of work centers around the recent acquisition, Defeated, depleted, 2018.
