Works by 19 national and international artists bring new perspectives to the genre, which has historically been labeled as ‘women’s work’ and commonly dismissed in fine art conversations. By merging traditional embroidery techniques with innovative approaches and social/political themes, the artists in this exhibition create powerful narratives that challenge outdated perceptions and elevate textile art to new heights."},"discountAvailable":null,"curatorInsight":{"curatorInsight":"Entering Bedford's large circular gallery, one is immediately enthralled by Michelle Kingdom's vignettes of tourists posing in a tropical landscape stitched into a lacy antique table runner. The juxtaposition of mundane scenes and vintage cloth inspires thoughts of raw materials, where they come from, and the means by which they have traditionally been obtained. Exploitation is woven into the history of textile production. Spotlighting 19 international fiber artists, \"Stitched\" joins mordant political commentary (Stacey Lee Webber sewing red clown noses and rainbow wigs onto paper money presidents) with gorgeous abstractions (Lisa Kokin's breathy floating minimalism, Jose Romussi's Impressionist landscapes reborn as fuzzy sweaters) alongside the pure poetry of Elliot Schultz's thread-based zoetropes.
