"I Am An…,"

Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University

Stephanie Syjuco's monumental handmade banner, "I Am An ...," is a powerful meditation on the connection between identity, protest, and political legibility in contemporary society. When completely expanded, the stark white block letters read I AM AN AMERICAN.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock had to say about "I Am An…," :

The Cantor Arts Center at Stanford was originally founded in 1894 – its classical architecture is a mix of traditional historical architectural styles that provide a profound backdrop for Manila-born, Oakland-based alumnus Stephanie Syjuco’s “I AM AN...” When fully expanded, Syjuco’s handmade banner reads I am an American – and the message remains evident even when it is not.
