Ordinary Objects / Wild Things

de Young Museum

The artworks on view in this gallery demonstrate a diversity of approaches taken by artists working on paper over the past fifty years to representing some of the common objects with which we surround ourselves today, deploying ordinary objects to extraordinary ends.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock has to say about Ordinary Objects / Wild Things :

This exhibition surveys works on paper from the last 50 years that depict, with varying degrees of realism, domestic quotidian objects. Claes Oldenburg’s giant electrical gadget, “Three-Way Plug,” is shown alongside Willie Cole’s ironing boards-cum-printing plates designed to produce ghostly images of the artifacts of the slave trade, bringing dark histories into full light.
