Exquisite Art Under Adverse Conditions

Japanese American Museum of San Jose

"Exquisite Art Under Adverse Conditions: From The Japanese American Incarceration Camps: 1942-1945," is the extensively remodeled and enhanced section of the museum dedicated to the art and craft created by many artisans who were forcibly held in the camps during World War II.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock had to say about Exquisite Art Under Adverse Conditions :

One of the most astonishing legacies of the Japanese American Internment Camps was the impulse to create art under adverse conditions in desolate incarceration camps, with meager materials. An extensively remodeled and enhanced section of the Japanese American Museum of San Jose showcases handiwork reflecting the Art of Gaman (the ability to endure the unbearable with dignity).
