Billy Budd

San Francisco Opera

When young Billy is pressed into naval service aboard the H.M.S. Indomitable, the recruit's youth and innocence arouse devotion from the crew, but a commanding officer's suspicions and dark desire threaten to throw order into chaos. Benjamin Britten's tempestuous masterpiece based on the novella by Herman Melville returns to San Francisco Opera for the first time in 15 years.

This is what SF/Arts curator Jesse Hamlin has to say about Billy Budd :

American baritone John Chest make his SF Opera debut in the title role of Britten’s stormy 1951 classic based on Melville’s novella, with a libretto by E.M. Forster and Eric Crozier. This Glyndebourne production features tenor William Burden as old Captain Vere and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn in his role debut as the evil officer John Claggart.
