in Pursuit of Venus [infected]

M.H. de Young Museum

The de Young museum exhibits the video work in Pursuit of Venus [infected] (2015), by New Zealand artist Lisa Reihana, as part of the Contemporary Art Program. Panoramic in format, the animated, digital scroll is a moving image interpretation of the 19th-century French scenic wallpaper Les Sauvages de la Mer Pacifique (Native Peoples of the of the South Pacific) and its romanticized depiction of European explorations in Polynesia.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock had to say about in Pursuit of Venus [infected] :

This panoramic installation spans seventy feet wide and thirteen feet tall, and is based on 19thcentury French scenic wallpaper featuring romanticized depictions of European explorations in Polynesia. This newly acquired work by New Zealand artist Lisa Reihana, to be shared with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, has been presented to rave reviews, including at the 2017 Venice Biennial.
