Mike Henderson: At the Edge of Paradise

Haines Gallery

Pioneering African American painter and filmmaker Mike Henderson has been a fixture of the Bay Area art scene since the 1960s. For his latest solo exhibition at Haines Gallery, the artist presents a suite of large abstract paintings whose complex palettes and carefully worked surfaces explore the tension between gestural and geometric abstraction. Radiant with possibility, Henderson's latest works suggest an artist who has arrived at his prime.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock has to say about Mike Henderson: At the Edge of Paradise :

Bay Area legacy artist, filmmaker, and Blues musician and 2019 Artadia Award winner Mike Henderson is having a moment – this solo exhibition at Haines Gallery coincides with a recent retrospective at SFAI and anticipates a major career retrospective at the Manetti Shrem Museum at UC Davis in July 2022, where Henderson taught for more than 40 years.
