Choreographer and dancer Tom Brady first staged Man in the Box in NYC in 1979. Since then it has enjoyed a 40 year life as a sort of work-in-progress. One finally coming to San Francisco. The audience is invited to witness a narrative on a stage filled with a forest of 15-foot poles as a man on the edge between living and dying wrestles with his former/younger self (played by Monica Newsam) to try and understand what has been gained ... and lost.
It’s not often that audiences have the opportunity to witness a dance/performance art piece like “Man in the Box” that has been forty years in the making. An epic sculptural set coupled with Zlato Cosic’s videography will provide the container for choreographer Tom Brady’s journey, in which he and collaborator Monica Newsam take a deep dive into the world of internal and external struggle.
