Stephen Frykholm: Summer Picnic Posters

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

In 1970, furniture company Herman Miller -- producer of iconic pieces by designers such as George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames -- hired Stephen Frykholm to lead its recently established graphic design department. One of Frykholm's first assignments was to create screenprinted posters for the Sweet Corn Festival, an annual company-wide summer picnic.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock had to say about Stephen Frykholm: Summer Picnic Posters :

Stroll through this sweet gem of a show on your way to the SFMOMA café—it’s a foray into the look of Herman Miller in the ’70s and ’80s. Hired by the furniture design company in 1970, Stephen Frykholm was first tasked with creating posters for the Sweet Corn Festival, the annual company picnic. The bold graphics are a treat to the eye in bright colors and timeless design.
