About
Anne Buckwalter’s creative practice explores female identity and the coexistence of contradictory elements. Inspired by the folk art traditions of her Pennsylvania Dutch heritage, her work arranges disparate objects in mysterious domestic interiors and ambiguous spaces. By imagining obscure narratives that embrace paradoxes, her paintings delve into questions about the body, femininity, sexuality, and desire.
SF/Arts Curator Insight
The gallery inaugurates its new space across from the Transamerica building with a collection of Anne Buckwalter's gouaches depicting domestic space. For some reason the delicacy of floor, wallpaper, and fabric patterns generates a feeling of peace and intimacy into which female nudes up to all manner of frolic are sometimes introduced -- a little bit of bondage gear, the red hand print of a fresh slap. There is humor in the intricate detail. What do people do in the privacy of their own homes?
