SF/Arts Curator Insight
The celebrated Bay Area composer John Adams wrote the music, and the libretto – drawn from Shakespeare, with additional passages from Virgil, Plutarch and other classical texts – for his new opera Antony and Cleopatra. Commissioned for San Francisco Opera’s centennial, it stars Canadian bass-baritone Gerald Finley and the Egyptian-born soprano Amina Edris in the title roles of the tragedy.
