Alice Neel: People Come First
About
Alice Neel (1900–1984) was one of the century’s most radical painters, a champion of social justice whose longstanding commitment to humanist principles inspired her life as well as her art. This is the first comprehensive West Coast retrospective of Neel’s work. The award-winning exhibition includes paintings, drawings, and watercolors, along with additional artworks and media exclusive to the San Francisco presentation.
SF/Arts Curator Insight
Alice Neel: People Come First is a close up look at the world and social life of leftist painter Alice Neel. Known mostly for her still life portraits, Neel offers us a look at a historical moment living in Spanish Harlem. Her paintings capture the joys and sorrows of people in the throws of social movements. At once contemplative and celebratory, the paintings serve as a site of memory and deeper engagement with the history of New York City, and the intimate relationships that sustained the subjects, the painter, and their legacy today. The show closes on July 16, make sure to take a look soon. Tickets are free on the first Saturday of the month.
