Space is a central obsession for Mills, and his music often takes on the form of musical science fiction—embodying the future while respecting the past and remaining firmly rooted in the present.

One of the inventors of Detroit techno, Jeff Mills returns to San Francisco for a rare U.S. performance: he’ll be live-scoring Fritz Lang and Thea von Harbou’s 1927 classic Metropolis. Mills released Metropolis Metropolis, his musical re-imagining of the silent sci-fi epic, in 2023; the Palace of Fine Arts will see him perform it live to the film. Mills told an interviewer that he approached the soundtrack “with the idea that one might listen to it 100 years from now, thus watching a 200 year old film.”
