SF/Arts Curator Insight
The new chamber opera by composer Max Duykers and librettist Philip Kan Gotanda, Both Eyes Open, unfurls a story of love, sacrifice and resolve amid the dehumanizing internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. The music encompasses taiko drumming, big band riffs and sampled electronics, in a production that uses scenic projections and draws on the ancient Japanese tradition of Daruma “wishing” dolls.
