Christina Fernandez: Multiple Exposures
About
his landmark exhibition surveys the work of Christina Fernandez, the Los Angeles-based artist who has spent thirty years exploring migration, labor, gender, her Mexican American identity, and the unique capacities of the photographic medium.
SF/Arts Curator Insight
Centering ideas of migration, labor, and gender in her wide-ranging photographic and installation practice, artist Christina Fernandez presents over three decades of her work in the landmark exhibition Christina Fernandez: Multiple Exposures. Deeply informed by her Mexican American identity and family’s involvement in the Chicano movement, Fernandez’s conceptual practice has paired aesthetic inquiry with political commitment since the 1990s. The San Jose Museum of Art will present Fernandez’s most notable photographic series and installations in the artist’s first solo exhibition. In this comprehensive exhibition, Fernandez flows seamlessly between portraiture and landscape photography, addressing the intersections between the personal and the political as grounded in her immediate community in East Los Angeles and her family’s history of migration.
