About
McEvoy Arts’ fifth anniversary exhibition Color Code celebrates color and its vibrant expressions in the arts. Modern and contemporary artworks from the McEvoy Family Collection join four new commissions by Bay Area artists Sadie Barnette, Angela Hennessy, Clare Rojas, and Zio Ziegler to showcase how we bring color into our lives.
SF/Arts Curator Insight
Aristotle believed deities sent color from the heavens via celestial rays. At times color feels ecstatic in McEvoy's fifth anniversary exhibition, most especially while standing in front of Marilyn Minter's "Spyder," a large photographic close up of thick lashes topped by glitter eyeshadow. "Color Code" features classic colorists such as Yves Klein and Josef Albers, alongside new commissions by Bay Area artists Sadie Barnette, Angela Hennessy, Clare Rojas and Zio Ziegler. Barnette's cupcake hued family tree shares a wall with a Gordon Park photo that reminds us of color's many shades of meaning. Don't skip The Exploratorium-curated screening room, especially "In Waking Hours," which carries out a sight experiment originally proposed in 1632 and begins the video program at the top of each hour.
