About
David Ireland’s most iconic works to explore questions surrounding conceptual art and the issues artists confront when deep in studio work will be on view at 500 Capp Street. The rooms of the House will be populated with works that will, for the first time since 500 Capp Street’s public opening, provide a preview of David Irelands’ live-work art practice from 1974 to 2004.
SF/Arts Curator Insight
The house at 500 Capp Street, home to conceptual artist David Ireland, became an ongoing exhibition space that grew into a living sculpture, each room a work of art housing art, blurring the lines between intention and practice, labor and life. Now a museum and archive, exhibitions of Ireland's work regularly rotate throughout the structure, sometimes taking on new forms, sometimes (as in this show) reproducing configurations generated during the artist's life. "Intellectual Coyote" Guillermo Gómez-Peña colonized Ireland's dining room while participating in Capp's "Decolonizing the Archive" program, strategically placing objects from his own collection in dialogue with those already in place. Meanwhile, the city's rich alternative art history is on display in the newly launched Paule Anglim Archive Room, featuring objects and ephemera from that SF gallerist grand dame's impressive Bay Area collection.
