Dreaming in Cuban
About
Previews June 23th & 24th
World Premiere #68: from the Central Works Writers Workshop a new adaptation by Cristina García of her celebrated novel.
A haunting, bittersweet story of the del Pino family, a family divided in the wake of the Cuban revolution. With her characteristic humor and emotional fireworks, García weaves a complex tale of yearning and aspiration, of one child’s longing for the home she left behind, and another’s desire to find a new home in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty.
A finalist for the National Book Award, characterized by the New York Times as “Dazzling… Remarkable…A jewel of a novel.”

Berkeley’s dedicated new-plays company, Central Works, presents the world premiere of Cristina García’s adaptation of her own 1992 novel of the same name, described as “a haunting, bittersweet story of a family divided in the wake of the Cuban revolution.” Now, García has collaborated with Central Works artistic director Gary Graves to shape the novel—which follows three generations of women from the 1930s to the 1980s and from Cuba to America--into a stage play.

For over three decades Central Works has filled a special niche for theater artists in the San Francisco Bay Area, producing more new plays by local playwrights than any other company in the region. “The New Play Theater” utilizes three basic strategies: some are products of the Central Works Method, some are developed in the Central Works Writers Workshop, and some come fully developed.
