Dress Rehearsal: The Art of Theatrical Design
About
In celebration of the Legion’s 100th anniversary, this exhibition brings together a selection of our most outstanding costume and set designs through two intertwined stories — the history of theater and dance, and the founding of the Legion of Honor.
SF/Arts Curator Insight
One of several elements of the Legion of Honor’s ongoing 100th anniversary celebration, Dress Rehearsal: The Art of Theatrical Design is a curated selection of the institution’s most outstanding costume and set designs through two avenues — the history of theater and dance, and the founding of the Legion of Honor. Navigating through a vast collection of theater and dance material, this exhibition relies heavily on cofounder Alma de Bretteville Spreckels’ collection of drawings. From rare design work by Léon Bakst to avant-garde painters Natalia Goncharova and Marie Laurencin, this exhibition weaves a riveting tale of the history of ballet and theater through the visual magic of the stage.
