About
The landscape of memory has shifted dramatically over the course of the Digital Age, marked by the ease and speed at which we can record, store, and share information. Through digital technologies, almost anyone can participate in the production of memory at any time. Yet the ever-growing digital archive has substantial financial and ecological impacts that we must address.
SF/Arts Curator Insight
Drawing attention to the timely question of memory in an expansive context, "Encode/Store/Retrieve" brings together artworks from SJMA’s collection to explore low-tech forms. It is difficult to think of coding memory outside of Silicon Valley’s influence. Yet, as more life shifts to the cloud, we might think instead about the analog forms of impression that have preserved human wisdom for millennia. This exhibition is encouragement to find the human element in what we pass along.
