SF/Arts Curator Insight
For its 45th anniversary celebration, Fraenkel Gallery invited ten of its visual artists to curate double features, comprised of movies especially meaningful to them. A highlight of the series is what promises to be a lively onstage conversation, preceding the showing of “The Right Stuff,” between two old friends: Berkeley photographer Richard Misrach and the film’s San Francisco-based director, Philip Kaufman, who has evinced an abiding interest in photography. ”I’ve had actors playing photographers,” Kaufman recalled via email. “Brassai in “Henry & June,” Capa in “Hemingway & Gellhorn”— and many of my films have been shaped visually by reference to various photographs and paintings.
