Kronos Quartet with special guest Wu Man
About
Kronos Quartet visits with frequent collaboratorWu Man for a performance of compositions written for the unique instrumentation of string quartet plus pipa. Terry Riley’s The Cusp of Magic creates a synergy between the quartet and the plucked Chinese lute. Tan Dun’s Ghost Opera was written for the first meeting of this quintet in 1994 and has remained in Kronos’ repertoire ever since.
SF/Arts Curator Insight
The Kronos Quartert has often collaborated over the years with musician Wu Man, incorporating into their repertoire the unique sound of her pipa, a popular Chinese stringed instrument that's been played for thousands of years. At Berkeley's Zellerbach, the group will perform pieces composed for this unique instrumentation, including Tan Dun's Ghost Opera, written for the quintet's first meeting almost 30 years ago.
