Max von Sydow: The Best Stradivarius
About
It has been a year since Max von Sydow passed away at the age of ninety on March 8, 2020, his death perhaps eclipsed by the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, but certainly not forgotten. BAMPFA joins forces with the California Film Institute and the Consulate General of Sweden, San Francisco, to present this tribute and accompanying livestream lecture and interview series with leading film authorities. Copresented with the California Film Institute.
SF/Arts Curator Insight
With a craggy face for the ages, von Sydow, who died last year, had a seven-decade career and appeared in more than 150 films, 11 with Swedish director Ingmar Bergman including “The Passion of Anna” and “The Seventh Seal” (1957), where he played a 14th century knight in a chess match with the grim reaper. He was also the three-eyed Raven in “Game of Thrones.” BAMPFA’s mini-tribute features Jan Troell’s “The Emigrants,” Billie August’s “Pelle the Conquerer” and others. The series may be extended. Stay tuned.
