Featuring the choreography of Kiandanda Dance Theater artistic director, Chanel “Byb” Bibene and an original score performed live by composer Manolo Davila, Religion Kitendi focuses on the lives of Congolese Sappeurs and uses haute couture fashion to examine the prevailing legacy of the slave trade and European colonization of Africa and the creation of the African Diaspora.

SF/Arts Curator Insight

The San Francisco International Arts Festival is known for bringing cutting-edge music, dance, theatre and performance art to Bay Area audiences, and their 2022 Summer Series is no exception. In June, join David Brandstätter and Michelle Jacques at CounterPulse for the US premiere of the interdisciplinary collaboration “FRE!HEIT’, which translates to ‘freedom’ in English. Then, in July, make your way to ODC Theater for the world premiere of “Religion Kitendi - Dress Code” by Kiandanda Dance Theater.
