About
With 36 pieces ranging in size, Moules creates an impressive integration of canvas and silicone, deftly contrasting the mediums in some, while choosing to blend them almost seamlessly in others. The resulting exhibition juxtaposes puritanical, conservative Christian history with the imagery of 1980s horror films that have become representative of queer culture, for an undeniable deep dive into identity.
SF/Arts Curator Insight
Asking "what does it mean to be a queer body in nature?" Moules deploys squishy, flesh-tone silicone, rendered with moles, freckles, and other imperfections, as skin stretched across and often obscuring traditional landscapes, some of which are littered with jock straps. (!?!) Perhaps the remnants of a radical faery gathering in the woods? The result is an overall WTF reaction provoked by the juxtaposition of the pastoral with cinematic body horror. A truly novel take on the nature of bodies or bodies in nature.
