SF/Arts Curator Insight
A dark painting of figures (some masked) emerging from deep shadows hangs adjacent to a large, stark, black and white image of a black family proudly standing together in front of their home. In another photo a young woman stares at the photographer, bright white letters spell the word "UNARMED" across her chest. Bodies tumble in embrace or conflict across colorful line drawings on sheets of paper torn from a calendar. I am not sure whether the gallery's hard white overhead light joins or separates the works in this show. Does it enhance or diminish their mystery, adding harshness or augmenting a quality that is already there?
