SF/Arts Curator Insight
Premiering on the West Coast in a co-production with The Royal Danish Theatre, San Francisco Opera’s The Handmaid’s Tale, based on Margaret Atwood’s terrifying dystopian novel, tells the tale of women being forced into childbearing servitude by an extremist theocratic regime. Accompanied by Poul Ruders’ powerful score, the fictional world depicted in this dramatic opera seems increasingly closer to a possible and looming reality.
