The Joffrey Ballet; Anna Karenina
About
Love is all-consuming for Anna, who is married but finds herself caught in the maelstrom of a life-changing love affair with the dashing Count Vronsky. The dancers of the Joffrey Ballet return to Berkeley with Anna Karenina, full-length story ballet choreographed by Yuri Possokhov and featuring an original score by award-winning composer Ilya Demutsky, performed live by the Berkeley Symphony.
SF/Arts Curator Insight
Passion. Betrayal. Sacrifice. Tumult. And trains – so many trains. These motifs, along with many others, intersect in “Anna Karenina,” written by Leo Tolstoy in the late 1800s. Numerous dancemakers have adapted this epic saga into a full-length production, including Yuri Possokhov for Chicago’s Joffrey Ballet. An instant hit when it premiered in 2019, the Joffrey returns to Cal Performances for the ballet’s Bay Area debut, featuring live accompaniment by the incomparable Berkeley Symphony.
