About

Set in a remote Isle of Man fishing community (but shot in Cornwall), The Manxman is Alfred Hitchcock’s penultimate silent film and one of the best and most mature works of his early career. The story follows two boyhood friends who take markedly different paths in adulthood: Pete becomes a fisherman, Philip a lawyer. Both fall in love with the same woman, the daughter of a puritanical Methodist, bringing them into conflict not only with their own moral code but also that of the strict Manx society.

SF/Arts Curator Insight

There’s no more atmospheric a venue to experience a silent film than the soaring Grace Cathedral. Especially, if said film is directed by Hitchcock and accompanied by live music performed by the Oakland Symphony Orchestra. “The Manxman “ (1929) is a mature, late silent-era work and the last silent production before the master of suspense transitioned to sound. Set in an austere fishing village on the Isle of Man, it essays the conflicting loyalties of a pair of boyhood friends obsessed with the same woman. Trouble ahead.
