Word for Word brings 3 works of Irish author and story master Kevin Barry to the stage: Who’s-Dead McCarthy, The Wintersongs, and The Coast of Letrim. As is always the case with Word for Word, their goal is to honor the author’s intent by using every word of a text to bring the story to life for the audience through atmospheric visuals, imaginative staging, and honed performances. If you like your humor a wee bit dark, these stories are for you.

San Francisco’s literary troupe, Word for Word, works its theatrical magic on three short stories by the Irish author Kevin Barry: “Who’s-Dead McCarthy,” a darkly comic tale of a messenger of death; “The Wintersongs,” a poignant encounter between a loquacious old lady on a train and a silent young woman; and “The Coast of Leitrim,” in which an Irish man and a Polish woman form a complicated bond. Stories are staged verbatim and imaginatively.
